2021年11月12日The American rock band Tenacious D were originally a joke band, created by lead singer and guitarist Jack Black, who went on to play the character of Kyle Gass in the film The Pick of Destiny. At the time their debut album was released by Tommy Boy Records, they were unknown musicians from Los Angeles who had been playing since 1994. They achieved fame after appearing as guest stars on an episode of Saturday Night Live in 2001. Their debut album went platinum and its follow-up was successful as well.
Formed in 1994, Tenacious D has pushed the boundaries between heavy metal and comedy with music they refer to as "cock rock." Their first album became one of Tommy Boy’s highest selling releases ever releasing 10 million copies worldwide. But the success of The Pick of Destiny paled in comparison to Tenacious D’s attempt to take their act on the road.
But after the release of Tenacious D’s second album, Rize of the Fenix, they were forced to abandon their quest for worldwide fame. Instead they followed their muse into corporate America…
Their first comedy film, The Pick of Destiny, was released in 2002 and it went on to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. But The Pick of Destiny seemed like a fluke at first; Jack Black had merely used his years as Kyle Gass as an excuse to hide his voice behind sunglasses and paintball armor. But Jack Black and Kyle Gass turned out to be the perfect duo; the two came together to make an album that has sold well over 2 ½ million copies worldwide.
This is how Tenacious D: The Complete Masterworks was created: a two-disc, 34-track collection from Oglio Records that encompasses every song from their first two albums as well as seven new tracks from Rize of the Fenix. In this exclusive interview, Jack Black and Kyle Gass recall their first meeting at a summer camp for children with emotional problems.
They talk about their first real gig which happened in 1996 at the House of Blues. Despite playing after The Offspring, they were well received by an audience that was blown away by their act. They describe their debut album as the cure for everyman’s blues and how it became a success without them knowing it. They talk about touring with The Offspring and how they ended up replacing Marilyn Manson on the Warped Tour.
